I was thinking that somethen bad must have happened to ML in the past and that he always had a dog who comforted him. Thats why he asks if he was happy in this life now. The same slope probably happened before where the ML hurts himself from maybe loving a cat that ends up hurting him like scratches him? But he always comes around the cat even when he gets hurt.
