If you consider /this/ as negativity, then imagine how much worse all the comments rudely dismissing the trauma of the FL must make those with real mental illnesses reading the comment section feel:) Those comments are surely having a 'negative effect' on people as well, right?
True, fiction is not real life. And people are entitled to their own opinions. Thus, just like that, we are also entitled to at least try spread a little awareness, and put forth our viewpoint. No one is forced to follow it, you can just scroll past or block if you wish to not see more of it (=・ω・=)
They posted negativity first, so don't be too shocked if someone opposed with negativity.
I apologise. I admit I'm being aggressive in this matter. Even if it's fiction, it's still have to have some things based on real life so readers could relate. And in this story, it's fl's trauma. If people comment those things, it's bound to have some retaliation. Because some readers could relate and will want to straighten things.
I just want to tell people to be more educated or sensitive with mental issues.
lmao, just cause its fiction so what? yh people have opinions, but just because people have one doesn't mean they can't be open to criticisms and discussions
this isn't negativity, this is you not being able to take criticisms.
what op said isn't wrong. those who haven't been through trauma and haven't experienced it and are commenting "why isnt she strong, her development is slow" ARE ignorant because they have no idea what the actual process of healing from something traumatic is like.
THANK YOU for saying this. i love this story so much because of the fl. in my own way i think she’s extremely strong, smart and beautiful in her own way, unlike in many other historical romance stories. I’ve commented about this before because i saw a lot of ppl complaining about the female character, and it sorta made me mad and upset. although it deals with fiction it also shares real life concepts into the story. :)
This is true. If you’ve read Ebony, the FL there had a very abrupt dramatic change just after a few months (?) in her new home. The story was fine but her abrupt change in that story made me drop it because it was not natural that it bothered me. Reaaallly bothered me a lot. On the other hand, FL here in Under the Oak Tree is more natural in terms of overcoming her restraints and all.
Exactly. I also think, as a reader, I find stories in which a traumatized character resolving their trauma too quickly to be really unstable and almost perplexing because the trauma and reminisce of abuse and the slow rebuild of one's personhood is part of the character development of a fictional character (and real people). It makes me dizzy when a character is like, all of a sudden okay and suddenly "strong". Like, its unrealistic and awkward to say the least. Also, in those stories, I feel like the authors just milk the fact that a character was abused as part of their backstory (sobstory) but they don't resolve it because it's too complex and it would take time to kill all those psychological demons. AND! Those stories that move on from the abuse too quickly - I feel like in addition to using abuse as a character trait instead of events that harbor lots of history and trauma and complexity, by moving quickly through the abuse, they are disregarding the mental complexity of their characters FOR PLOT. That is frustrating because when a plot takes over instead of the characters, the story begins getting boring. I prefer slow builds like this because these types of stories reveal the journey of healing. Yes, romance and adventure is great and all, but characters carry a story. I don't want a character who is well-written to suddenly grow at an unrealistic rate to please readers. A well-written character takes time because real people take time. I understand the frustration because fiction should be able to take creative liberty with one's growth rate, but Max's trauma began in such a real way, it's only reasonable that it continues in a real way. Just my two cents.
Oh, thank goodness I wasn't the only one who felt the same way. I like Ebony but that jump that made her character development a little shaky. However, I like Ebony more than The Sacrificial Princess. TSP is a fine story. Lol, I'm not bashing it but that is one story where I felt the development to be too quick and then it's an awkward reading experience afterwards because her actions don't make any sense. Like, her quickly moving on is fine but then it disregards the actual effects and weight of the abuse and trauma she faced. I'm not saying trauma for everyone is the same, nor am I saying we should create stories with predictable characters. BUT! For a character who has trauma to suddenly act like nothing is wrong causes discontinuities in the character profile and it feels like I'm swallowing sand while reading the story...
Not sure how this ended up with me not being able to take criticism as I for one never said anything about FLs trauma. But Id say my comment is criticism and you my dude aint taking it nicely and that's the same with the comment above.
Awareness is cool I like it but people are still entitled to their opinions and telling them to shut up aint cool. Im sure most people criticizing the FL aint targeting people with mental illness IRL but just the FL and how she affects the story. But you my dear friend are freely calling real people ignorant and stuff idk man like what do you even know about these people. I have suffered from abuse but I still respect peoples opinon of the story cause it's nothing personal.
It's great that you don't feel affected. I'm sincerely glad you're not. I posted that comment so people would be aware that SOME people CAN be affected.
I know that they don't have the intention to target people with mental illness or to hurt someone. I KNOW THAT AND I APPRECIATE THAT. I called them ignorant because they are not aware, and posted the comment for them to be aware. Is being ignorant so bad? Have you never been ignorant in your life? Being never ignorant means you're born all knowing. Therefore, being ignorant is not bad. It just shows a space for improvement or change. You can choose to change or remain as is.
And for the matter of "freely calling them ignorant", yes I am. They were freely brushing off the trauma and abused so I believe I can freely call them ignorant regarding this matter. As it is what I think and feel. I was ignorant at some point and is still ignorant in some things. I don't mean to belittle them. I just want to let them know.
Just because it's not you're intention, doesn't mean you're free from consequences.if I offended them through my word, then I hold responsibility for that but I stand my ground.
Yeah and thats ok but so do I. I never really talk about my mental illness and my own abuse and thats not my point tbh its just letting people say what they wanna say without telling them to shut it but just so you are aware since youre all for awareness and stuff there are people like me who prefer strong FLs cause IRL most of us are like the FL of this story but we don't have a Riftan or whoever and the abuse hasn't ended. We like how strong FLs can be who we want to be and reading their story is a form of escapism and its very satisfying. Im not bothered but I can see how it it can be disappointing that she's not improving.
Also ignorant and entitled are used as an insult regardless of what meaning you give behind it I just want you to understand you don't know these people there is no way or you to know if they are indeed ignorant and entitled but a simple comment about the FL. If you're so bothered by it just don't read the comments. I wouldn't have bothered with yours either until you told them to shut up like what do you think the comments are for

To all the people who are disappointed or angry because fl's improvement is slow:
if you ever had trauma and recovered in a short time frame aka fast. Good for you. But don't expect other people to do it as fast as you. That's an insult to all the people with trauma, including to yourself (if you ever had trauma).
And if you never had experienced trauma, then shut up because that's ignorance is you shouldn't flaunt. They were abused and you expect them to improve according to your decided timeframe? That's called ignorance. And to some point, entitled.
If you expect such development because this is fiction, the people reading this are real humans. Some readers have issues too or know someone who have, and can be bothered by your comments. I know the world is free and no can dictate what you do. But it can never hurt to be fairly sensitive.
Always remember, mental issues is never and will never be something you can just brush off or have "expectations" to. Please stop being ignorant and read more about psychological health. That kind of ignorance could kill people. And being educated about those kinds of issue can save people. You don't have to say any comforting words. You just have to shut up and never judge.
