He was not in a good mind space at this point, but he really did hope for a better lifestyle with Karel where he could reciprocate his feelings but he's literally sinking into his depression so he became apathetic but he put in the effort to act around Karel so he wouldn't burden or worry him. There is no denying they had a deep relationship in the time that they were together where Karel was somewhat of a lifeboat and a chain to Sasya.
So can you imagine meeting someone you were so close with at one point that you thought to be dead come back alive? Their reunion was just him being relieved to see Karels face again, and all the feelings that were suspended in the air when they had to forcefully part ways came crashing back so you can't blame him for desperately chasing after Karel after so long. Literally he's just happy to see a familiar face from the past alive and in front of him.
So if even after reading this, you reduce his desperation and struggle over the years to him being gold digger, you have not imagined what true debilitating depression or a reunion with a lost close bond could feel like.

They’d brush off Karel’s toxicity and how he’s the root cause of things turning out how they did yet condemned Sasya for leaving after he went to war without even knowing the full extent of what had happened yet.
