Yep ,in Hinduism specially in my region (traditions differ region to region)
we make some black gram(urad dal) vada(friend dish ) Ridge Gourd/chinese okra(torai)dishes ,and leave some food in utensils overnight (in case they visit to eat ) for those weeks , onion garlic alcohol and non vegetarian dishes are avoided .(idk why those dishes specifically are made)
It is believed is someone died in that period of time(idk how long it is,like few weeks?) Regardless of how much sins they committed they will immediately be reborn without wandering around , or go to heaven if that's what you believe
Its mostly expressing gratitude to ancestors, making them happy and making their afterlife peaceful. (Im not knowledgeableabout these things ,that's all what my parents told me )

This is actually the first time i heard about other’s practicing similar traditions as my family! We are buddhist and invite our deceased relatives over to eat on their death anniversary, cooking their favorite food, setting up an extra plate for them and decorating according to what they liked this makes me so happy!
