To call it emotional cheating is really jumping the gun here. MC used to have feelings for him and considered him a really close friend. He wants to spend time with him to catch but more importantly, come out to him and let him know about his boyfriend. I don’t think that counts as emotional cheating when he has no desire to be in a relationship with him.
