I think the death only goes one way. If Rupert dies, tori dies, but if tori dies, Rupert is fine.
That is also mentioned in this very same chapter. Rupert told Tori that she wouldn't like to harm her. Which means Tori could die if she was killed by Rupert.

So, what exactly happened in recent chapters?
Eva (Rupert mom) created Tori through alchemy. She link Tori's life with Rupert. So if Rupert dies, so does Tori. Eva's goal is to destroy the empire, and she want Rupert to be the one who did that. Tori is assigned to monitor him.
However, Rupert fell in-love with Lari, and give up his mom's goal. So Tori hated this idea and wanted to get rid Lari. Tori thinks that her life is unfair that why she's the one who suffer with bloody hands and cannot grow. So, she attempt to kill Rupert to end her life.
