What age gap? Isn't she like 2/3 and he's like 5/6? He isn't in love romantically. She's just his favorite person right now. Everyone fawns all over her, so for a kid who lost most of his own family, for her to show him attention and he can see she's pretty cool, of course that would make him happy. Lots of kids pick a favorite person. These a kids emotions not adults.
