I was womdering the same but I remeber his mom is beta and cant smell it. I'm not sure about Hanbits Dad (the MC stepdad) if he alpha he should have know.
Besides that I think the parents left them to their own devices for long periods of time or something, cuz when they put flashbacks you see them always together as brothers with the parents MIA
