Yeah the story could not hold my attention and got really tedious so I dropped it. Most readers on these type of sites are just here for the smut and fluff, even if meaningless, and more than ready to forego everything else a story is made of. They are quick to call others out for their prejudice but just as quickly resort to gaslighting and underhanded tricks when someone has an opinion different from them and never take accountability for it. I am guessing they are very inexperienced in life and media comprehension, maybe minors/immature, or are extremely insecure to be able to critically examine their own actions. They will dehumanize you, gang up on you and try to invalidate you just to get an upper hand by any means. It's sad though. They criticize their leaders and presidents for the same shit that they do in small microcosms like these sites.
Oh yeah I totally feel you on that lol. It’s so clear from the comments/discussions/etc that the average age on this site must be like 14. Putting aside how concerning it is that actual kids are reading all this toxic rape romance and not understanding how there’s anything bad about it, I feel like any site that has such a young online fan demographic is bound to be a shit show. It’s sucks bc it’s nice that there’s active community and discussion compared to some sites, but when you look at it, the quality of the conversations are so bad I can’t be bothered to argue with these kids, like you said they clearly lack media literacy and I’m not about to waste my time to teach it to them lol, but it does get frustrating that they can’t just ignore an opinion they don’t like.
I think I’m more sympathetic to the ‘mindlessly looking for mid stories’ aspect of engagement with this site because I understand the urge to escape from life with media, like the feeling of ‘no matter how mediocre it is it’s still better than my reality rn’, etc. but it seems you have higher standards, which I respect. Do you have recommendations for how you find stories that aren’t garbage, or any recs?
I get escaping from reality. I do it too. However online community for manga readership is huge and not niche like it once was. People's opinions here provide a window to their thought processes and belief systems. A lot of fans here are more blatant than they are on their official handles because of anonymity. so I find it harder to dismiss.
I don't have a proven method to find good stories. Initially I went on the bl subreddit and found a couple of credible and thoughtful readers. So I got recs from them once I told them what I liked. I found that the rating system on these sites is completely unreliable, so that's out of the question. Comments and reviews are equally unhelpful. When I like a story, I look for what other stories that writer has written. Sometimes I read the blurbs and see if I like the plot outlines. Sometimes I check reddit. Sometimes I just wing it. You can tell if a story is good by reading the first few chapters itself. Sometimes I look at lists, if there's a subgenre or theme I am interested in.

Strong, one of a kind, popular twinky MC with survivor guilt, strong, one of a kind, manipulative ML who wants to track and hire him, MC who wants to die as soon as he finishes his goals. Writers just recycle stories because they have nothing new or authentic to offer. Like assembly line storytelling. Tch.
