well to my uderstanding, queer is often used as a blanket term referring to gender identities and expressions of sexuality that are outside of the western idea of normal. Or basically, a blanket term to refer to identities and sexualities that fall under the lgbtqia+ umbrella.
Sometimes people use it if they know they arent cisgender or heterosexual, but dont identify with a specific label. Hope that helps :)

it was like every 10-20 chapters they had to make me cry. Its so hard to be queer now even when its more sociallably acceptable is a not of places, so seeign historical queer love and suffering like this actually made me cry my eyes out
