I am not sure but there are panels I saw him wearing US Army uniform with name tag Hale. Chapter 25. It's not a hint of his past but present time.

I doubt that the ml is actually gangster and not some agent setup by the both Korean and Spanish govt. Maybe I am wrong. It kinda might be related to the event that lead to mc lover dead, is there a chance ml was set up to track the actual event and the cause of it. Idk anymore..dude I wanna know
