From what I see, the story arc should be about Yoo having anger issues while Dan has anger deficit and after they *both* go through character development they should be able to meet somewhere in the middle and complement each other.
The story is good, but I think the author definitely went overboard with the abuse part. There was too much of it and it was too fetishized for the story to work properly now. An editor would be helpful, who would read it, cut out a lot, tone down some of it, and maybe give Dan a bit more character, give Yoo more depth, and it would be perfect.
