The season begins with a snippet of Jingi and Heonjae's childhood and home.

We find their young mother in a grocery store, looking at her reflection through the metal blade pair of scissors, seeing the bruises on her neck.

She walks away from the scissors and leaves it behind in the store without buying them.

Then at home, we see her on the phone with her own mom, whom she's asking money from. Her mom exclaims that she's given this daughter more than enough money and to stop contacting her from now on.

Jingi's mother apologizes and says that she knows this must be hard for her too, but she'll contact her again, then hangs up the phone.

Just then, her husband arrives home. So she says she'll prepare dinner right away.

As she continues cooking in the kitchen, two men sit on the dining table discussing. It's her husband and her husband's older brother. The older brother says that he feels bad for him as the youngest brother who was not given much financial support due to their second eldest sibling being in the hospital.

And ever since that second eldest sibling passed away, the older brother swore that he'd protect this youngest brother any way he can. He also expresses concern that the younger brother is appearing thinner and more quiet ever since he got married. He comments that his younger brother's wife may not be a bad person but she's a bit of a wall.

Just as the older brother takes a spoonful of the meal, he yells in pain! He had bitten on something hard, and spits out a piece of plastic.

Jingi's mother profusely apologizes that a piece of the kitchen utensil must have broken off and was left in the food.

The husband apologizes to his older brother and walks him out the door to go home.

As soon as the husband's older brother (a.k.a. Jingi and Heonjae's creepy evil abusive uncle), leaves the house, the husband starts hitting his wife and asks if she's purposefully trying to advertise that they're poor now. To show that their utensils were so old and worn out that a piece of plastic had broken off. We see a worn-down pair of kitchen scissors with the handle crumbling and missing pieces.

The husband projects his anger and insecurities on the wife and asks if she also thinks that it's his fault he made bad financial and business decisions that they can no longer afford house necessities.

Awoken by the loud yelling, a young (maybe around 3-years old) Heonjae, gets up from his nap and stands in the doorway. The father takes notice of him standing there. He starts yelling and walking towards Heonjae.

The mother desperate to stop the husband from hurting Heonjae, she calls for Jingi to close the door, but before Jingi knows it, the father had already grabbed the small Heonjae and shakes him violently, the mother begged the father to let go of him.

The father yells at Heonjae to start speaking properly at his age already. Why couldn't he speak, he was embarrassed to even show this kid to his older brother. The mother defends that some kids are just a bit late in speaking and begs for him to stop shaking Heonjae like that.

The father then tosses aside the little Heonjae mid-air, and Heonjae is dropped to the ground and hits his head split open on a broken piece of shard.

They end up in a hospital to treat the mother's wounds and Heonjae's split head. When they arrive home, young Jingi says he wishes their father was dead. The mother tells him not to speak like that. On the counter, she finds money and a note that tells her to buy new scissors with it.

Motivated by this, the mother uses the money to buy a new pair of kitchen scissors, believing if she'd just do better, then things won't turn out so bad.

But no matter what good she did, no matter how much better she cooked, how plentiful she provided with her own money she worked for, and even though the older brother was impressed and pleased with the food, the husband never stopped abusing her and the children.

As the abuse went on, one day, the mother finds herself packing her bags.

Jingi and Heonjae go into the kitchen to say that they're hungry. Heonjae, who still blubbered garbled nonsense like a baby, approaches their mother.

She notices Heonjae's still impaired speech and she holds onto his small arm. She asks herself what was it that she was doing wrong. Her grip on Heonjae's arm grew tighter as Heonjae started sobbing in pain.

Amidst his sobbing, little Heonjae mutters "maa" and "..ow". Just then, Jingi exclaims that Heonjae had just called her "Mom" for the first time.

Their mother comes to her senses and realizes she was hurting Heonjae, she holds him and tells herself that it can't go on like this.

Jingi asks his mom why she was crying.

Her tired and lifeless eyes then turn to look at the overflowing pot of boiling water next to them.

Notes:

Question, where is the third sibling we once heard about? Are they much older or much younger than Jingi and Heonjae that's why we don't see them around during their childhood? Do they even exist atp? Eh, must've been the wind.

Also, damn. Heonjae was literally dropped on his head as a baby. That's crazy.
