i'm not a one but i think cuz the mc wanted to kill himself he put the lights off ,the blonde thinks no one is home so it's ok to be bright, and in order to kill your self , there is several books and teachers that tell to turn off the lights for many reasons, i do not know but maybe the mc knows of this and so he turns them off
Actually thieves don't even usually steal at night, they enter homes midday when people are away at work.

actually a few teens just broke into my house few years before this when me and my family are doing some cleaning at the backyard in the middle of the day. and it's weekend! yes we're careless for leaving the gate open, but they were really fast, took the tv and phones and ran out. my lil brother noticed right when they drove their bike off. since then we mke sure to lock the houses n gate when we're out even for gardening
