Three months is too short for you? A lot of comics show couples dating each other shorter than that. I know people who dated after knowing each other for a month.

But then I found out that Japanese people tend to say “I love you” almost after they start dating. So I guess not knowing each other for a long time and start dating is normal in Japan.
