I don't think Aseph is really fighting for his intention. Knowing his sneaky personality, I do think he had another motive... Than just being the perfect son in law.
Actually, it was kind of smart, he used his charm to stop an awkward situation that could have the possibility to degenerate. He actually manage to put the center of intention on himself but for once, I don't think it was with any ill intention against the prince.
