When I was first introduced to Yaoi, it was also through YOI. I saw it, thought it was disgusting, and moved on. And then I got into Fairy Tail and read one slash fic. And then OHSHC. And a few slash fics from that. And then Hero Aca. And half the gae ships from that. You just need the right- or wrong mindset

i personally find yaoi disgusting too, but shounen ai is okay. i don't like sex and stuff like that and even if it's between a woman and a man it disgusts me, it may be the same with them. not all the yaois are the same but generally in all of them they start to fuck each other without any emotions(same with the hentais lol.) because of that fact, it's normal people to say that, even if it's wrong. also, don't get me wrong, i support lgbt. i just like seeing people slowly falling love with each other, not fucking each other. have a nice day!
That's what yaoi stands for it's basically porn (books) . Some have a better story coming with the sexual themes and some are just there to fullfill ones sexual desire or fantasies.
At first i only liked Sounen ai but then the more books i read the opener I got and the more I found yaoi interesting as well. Amd there really are some good yaois out there.
But of course that's just my pov
Japanese people don't call BL yaoi, and this like yuri on ice is BL not yaoi. Yaoi is a alternative name for gay doujinshi's. Western people are the ones who are misusing japanese culture and making ir seem more perverted. There are many different sides of BL, some are innocent love stories and some are explicit like hetero material. Idk why people blow Japanese BL out of proportion and call it fetishism when that's dependent on the readers. Its just fun content and lets use the Japanese terms right, not what westerners have rebranded it as
So I am introduced to Yaoi mainly due to Yuri on Ice and I read some manga with shounen ai tags so... My sister is not really against it but you she told me it feels uncomfortable sometimes to read things that are BL or watch animes with BL genre. Then there is this gurl and guy that I seat with in class. They are manhwa reader (the girl) and anime fan (the boy) and they kinda say things about Yaoi how it is gross and weird to think how two handsome boys bang each other.
I don't know what to say to them so I changed course hahahahaha bruh this just a joke but hey I also don't really get it why people keeps on thinking that reading Yaoi is gross and uncomfortable. I know there are certain genres and stories that are really offsetting sometimes but do you really have to say that in my face?
I feel so sad how some girls are being told that reading Yaoi is like masturbating while watching porn for boys. I feel offended actually when someone told me "isn't yaoi basically porn for girls?" I MEAN WTF IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE
