I know, usually slaves in stories and history are people that got kidnapped or sold by family but in this story they made it that slaves are people that borrowed money (maybe?) but couldn't pay it so they became slaves it's illegal there but maybe many of them were the ones who borrowed money, because if they were kidnapped other people would know that they are missing, if they borrowed money and couldn't pay it back other people would think that they ran away or working to pay the debt

Chapter 54, did they just say that the slaves were at fault and deserved to be punished for being slaves
