The name most likely stems from the Greek goddess of love: Aphrodite (hence *Aphrodi-siac* sometimes made with chemicals, sometimes naturally occurring (bleeding heart, ginseng, sandalwood, yohimbe, clary sage, lavender, carpolobia, ylang ylang among others) they are known to cause arousal and are possibly what were known as love potions back in ancient times. (That’s my theory anyway..)
