Yes there're literally still kids who are small and powerless they were beaten and neglected they are trying to survive and trust is not easy to fix when broken and they have had no way to defend themselves it's not their fault
them haters be underestimating what neglect can do to the human psyche (child or not)
we know that the king's affection is genuine ONLY BECAUSE the author shows it to us, we know their inner/true feelings
but the twins don't. they aren't omniscient like us readers. their mindset is frustrating but it's not like chose to have it that way.
IRL, their case would take literal YEARS of family therapy, their excessive distrust have just reasons
