It's kind of sad how Ben was always trying to get his teacher's attention/affection, but despite his attempts mentor didn't want to get too close with him (for various reasons). They are quite similar and teacher probably didn't want the same fate for Ben. He probably went through a lot, like exclusion, loneliness and hatred towards him based on his appearance and incredible powers. To conclude I assume he deeply cared for him despite being seemingly cold.

Idk if the author choose to go with that route, but I don't think they will(?) Since remember their previous manhwa before, the ML in that manhwa literally said, "if liking you is not gay then what am i?" or something like "i like you that means I'm gay then" (not like any other manhwa when they go, "I'm not gay, i only sexually attracted to you" kind of plot) and the MC also pretty chill and open abt his sexuality..
So i think in this manhwa, the MC just had that gay awakening moment but based on this author previous work, i think they can make a good deliver of the story, like for the build up, the climax and problem solving, they have a pretty solid writing ╮(￣▽￣)╭
