I avoided reading this one for years bc I knew it was going to be sad. Honestly seems pretty realistic to me.

I don't feel bad for "Adolph" at all. Im glad he gets to suffer. I feel horribly for the main character and can relate to him a lot (partner of several years that betrays you during a traumatic part of you live = check). Moral of the story (at least I believe) is never sacrifice your life and goals for a man. Ever. Because that dickhead can go and ruin your life.
