i mean... if the story progressed and she was still emotionless i'd say it's pretty bad storytelling, i think it makes sense considering everything
It’s probably because we read it all in one sitting and it is a fast paced story but take into consideration it has been about ten years since they met. Of course neither of them would stay the same since their teens (when they first met), and there is also a major difference in cognitive development between a college student (the time she got pregnant) and a mature woman in her thirties (current time). Her teenager self had a lot of issues with her background, distrust and angst, she could be mature for her age but she was still a teenager. Her adult persona overcame even more difficulties and became a functional member of society. She fell in love, she suffered, she not necessarily moved on, but she still tried to live on the best way she could. Life changed her as it changes all of us.
