shoujo is not a genre at all but a demographic and it means mangas that are written (mostly) by women and whose target audience is young women. so what exactly makes this manga a historical shounen?

this one IS a shoujo manga actually. just like the sequel and the side stories are shoujo too. Except for Utakata ni Warau which is classified as seinen.
