it was from a different merman, it just so happened that that merman died and he Broke his first original Egg. He was scared when he realized that it was a baby egg so he took the dead merman's egg to cover the broken one. I hope I make sense. But he cried and admitted it to the priest and the priest made an assurance that not all eggs will live
