He was already weary of Zahid as his greatest enemy. Zahid did something incredibly abnormal so the Pope wanted to meet the person who made him suddenly want to get married so quickly. He hypothesized that she must be the world's only purifier due to how not only did Zahid marry her within a day of meeting her, but he also covered up nearly any information about her as if he didn't want others to find out something. It was incredibly suspicious, enough to warrant a visit to see the mysterious wife.

Well wizards are the only people who can rival his power as the most powerful man in the world and Zahid is the most powerful of all the wizards. So it makes sense that the pope wants to get rid of the only person who could stop him from doing whatever he wants.
