Oke so I looked it up from ppl who actually read the novel and SPOILER:
HE DOESN'T DIE GUYS!
Basically, he's really in love with Penelope, A LOT, when the real daughter of the duchy comes back (and surprise bitch she's the real villainess here) he tells Eclis that in order for him to have Penelope all to himself, he needs to help her (the real daughter) to get rid of Penelope from her position BUT he's getting tricked and in the end he "sacrifices himself" for the mc but he doesn't die, he loses his memories of mc and in a side story it shows that he ends up traveling the world without memories. Penelope sees him but she doesn't want him to see her bcs she doesn't want him to remember all the pain she caused to him. He honestly was just in love :((
