i think significance he had, was to make the main character realize life is short. so he did something he always wanted to do, but was afraid to do. sleep with his male friend. sometimes being confronted with death makes people brave.
i kinda wonder about the significance of the dreadlock guy... i thought that the main guy murdered him or smt... like he was experimenting with men and so he had a relationship with the dreadlock guy but then he murdered him?
