Frrr!
They’ll try to make a toxic character seem less toxic just to defend them instead of using their toxicity as the defense, which would make more sense! Or they’ll demonize a mc for doing something stupid/toxic despite the fact that them not doing that would end the story in the most boring way possible!
Like “they need to communicate properly!!” No shit! But then the driving conflict of the story would resolve prematurely!!!
“Seme is a dick, he shouldn’t be so mean to the uke, poor uke” BUT THEN IT WOULDNT BE A GOOD ENEMIES TO LOVERS STORY, PATRICIA!! Like cmon now! Think before you comment bs and just read!
phew...sorry for ranting here I just feel strongly about this cuz it’s like my pet peeve

you know what the difference is, right? Even stuff that's famous for being ''bad'' and cringy and liek killing stalking doesn't try to frame its protagonists as good people. But this story? It's absolutely painting the seme as the one who is right and he's objectively not. Everything about the way he treats the assistant is exploitative. The guy has no say in anything that happens. If you think about it for 2 seconds you'd realize that if the story wasn't adamantly shielding the seme from consequences by having the guy he's tormenting both like him AND feel apologetic towards him, then he's literally abusing his power to harass this dude in every way. And since when do we consider sleeping with infatuated people ''helping them''? That's rape. It would be, but the story doesn't want to be dark and toxic, it wants a good ''kind'' guy as protagonist and yet a criminal is what they're written.

Ok I can see where you would think that! However I never got the perception that the seme wasn’t a toxic person simply because he’s being shielded from consequences. But that in of itself is another aspect of drama and angst stories that occurs, shit it happens irl, people get away with shit! It’s not necessarily bad writing depending on the circumstances! Also remember that the uke is not being forced to to anything! Besides the drugging incident, wherein it’s further proved to us that the seme isn’t a perfect person and who lacks good judgment, the uke hasnt been forced sexually, yes he’s being used but he has his own principles that he’s adhereing to as his reasoning for putting up with the seme, he could have left at any time The seme wants the uke to hate him and quit so he doesn’t have to deal with the situation he’s in! This uke has his own demons and shit and this is why he “apologizes” because after remembering even he feels that he’s glad he didn’t go to the hospital or the police weren’t involved or whatever, we don’t consider that “helping” but he does because he has his own agenda, it’s not about what we think or what’s actually right! These two toxic people are in a toxic relationship and it’s been fully perceived (at least by me) as such! Nobody is in the right! And that’s my opinion based off what we’ve read so far
Chile not me writing this instead of my discussion board post assignments lmfao but anyway I think there are much clearer and easier ways to write a “nice guy” protagonist so I don’t think that’s what they were going for! Thanks for coming to me Ted talk

I just wish less people justified this by saying ''it's a dark manga!'' it's really not. It really makes no effort to talk about the situation the uke is in, how that makes him feel or anything, he doesn't even look unhappy once you're in his POV. He accepts what's happening as if it's natural and not in ''No escape!!'' way, he just never ADDRESSES what's happening. If there's something I despise is writing in serious elements and then disregarding them, probably because the author tought it was hot to have this dynamic but never went as far as wanting to develop out of that, so what you get is abuse that randomly becomes love and it's just bizarre. Not to mention that when the story does decide to make someone pay, it's the victim and you're supposed to uh. Feel bad for that horseshit seme. Nope. I refuse to give this manga the luxury of calling it dark and twisted, it's just bad.

Also I really don't perceive at ANY point in this story that the uke thinks of the seme as toxic, he just likes him and thinks he's kind because he raped him instead of bringing him to the hospital. I guess those were the only options, it's not like he could just let him sleep and keep it in his pants. Seme feels no guilt whatsoever. Uke is not toxic, he's being exploited because the seme knows he can do whatever he wants and the guy will still be there because of his promise or whatever. If this was about toxic people hurting each other I'd like to see that shitbag seme be hurt for once AND paying for his actions which are exponentially worse than the whatever you think the uke has ever done, which is nothing really lol

Yea I stopped reading Painter of the night after he thought he ran away and then proceeded to rape him vigorously, I just couldn’t continue the story after that, like I thought Seungho was developing as a character because he was showing genuine feelings for the painter but NOPE he just became and even worse person

The problem is that the seme knows that he is going to stay Bc he has this Unknown but very close bond with his father so even if the secretary could leave he’s exploiting the fact that he’s not. Aka rape. It happens a irl in workplaces ppl can’t just quit Bc they are broke but just because they stay doesn’t make their assault their fault

Like in killings talking it’s not a bl but it’s dark because of the codependence the characters have bum knows the shit he’s been through. We see him scared to go outside, we see fear and anxiety around sangwoo but we also see him heavily rely on sangwoo and “love” him. Idk if I can say their relationship every really shifts to romance but you can see each step especially at the end where bum is conflicted between hating or loving him after everything that happened even when woo was going to kill him
y’all yk you can like a physiological, toxic, drama etc etc story w/o loving and supporting the characters? right? just bc someone likes this manhwa it doesn’t mean that they agree w the shit they do
