Naw, I totally get your and lemonmusk's pov. I'd love if someone bought me a house under my name with no real strings. I could be fine with the guard, if they also are my chauffeur ;) She'd prob have been on board too!! It's more the lack of communication that's so very disappointing.
Ultimately, It's a period piece and this kinda toxicity was allowed because women were at the mercy of men's whims, for the most part due to physical strength and societal leverage of power. This story would be different if our MC didn't have the shitty dad but might have been "I Raised Cinderella Preciously" where Mrs. Barnes is lying about her husband being missing (instead of dead) in order to protect herself, her 2 daughter and 1 step-daughter (Cinderella)... Or, MC getting into an abusive relationship in which she ends up dead; as we saw in her real past life. V.v
