I'm pretty sure if a knight is told to use unharmed tricks during a duel, and that knight comes forward about it the duel can be called off. Or the knight could forfeit and leave the dukes estate to avoid death. He honestly had options, he is at all fault for his choices.

Exactly why I said he would leave the dukes estate. I know he wouldn't, more then likely coming forward with that information he will gain protection from someone else who backs the princes rule for the empire. This dude is at fault 100% he's a grown man who can make his own decisions.
