She knew the kid was murdered and instead of testifying to the police about what she heard, she made money off it and let the murderers get away with it--for a time. She was not innocent. Just think: if she had testified, there would be no plot, because the father wouldn't need vengeance. Her keeping her mouth shut ended up costing her her own life.
The researcher lady was probably guilty of the least offense, though she did a bad thing.
