I remember seeing a theory about why Nine was acting so protective in another website, and it said: "Could it be that Nine became overprotective because he "was given" the role of a "male lead" while Melissa "was given" the role of the "female lead"? In the (real) chapter 58 at the end, we see this blue ghost-like person that appeared when Yuri was imprisoned by the werewolf. Maybe that´s the "will of the author" that kicks in should the characters stray from the story? But Melissa can´t be controlled directly, so that ghost "changed" the "actors of the roles" to controll her through the people around her. Which means that those given the "male lead"-role will try to make her weak. Not in the sense of "I want you to be weak" but by making them overly worried whenever she trains/fights, and by preventing her from training the ghost can make her weaker, just like a "female lead" in a romance novel "should be".
