It looks to me like he panicked because the MC decided to end things and he didn’t know what else to do.
Aggressiveness you’ve been used to your whole life because it was done to you so you’ve always thought that it was fine to also do it to others, is not something that can easily disappear. I’m actually impressed that he managed to hold himself back compared to before.
