The root of her doubt for him was because of the contract and her own prejudice against him. She can't see his affection because she thinks that this is how Hugo treats all of his lovers. So she thinks that the gifts and the benefits she gets may be taken away in the future like how it happened with Sofia (the last lover he left).
Also, the duke is really ashamed with his bloodline (as he is a product of incest) so he doesn't feel comfortable in sharing anything yet.
And communication is hard at this point because they have the contract hanging over their heads. She promised not to love him and he sees that she hasn't really opened up that much to him yet.
No I know that but they both gotta step up. What they're both afraid of happening is already happening because of the fact that they aren't talking and it hurts to read. I'm just so ready for the misunderstandings to clear up
