Because the detective is aware, there is now no escape for the servant. He can obey the king and die with a semblance of honor, or he can be executed as an assassin.
When the king mentioned "subtle glances," that kind of implies the romantic sidelong glance? ;D
Or perhaps sly and sneaking. The word subtle just means 'done in such a way as to not be obvious to others' and does not, in itself, imply romance. Thieves and assassin's are also subtle. I would see it more as the attendant on occasion glancing over at the king thinking, 'he will never figure it out,' and the king occasionally glancing at the attendant thinking, 'he thinks I don't know,' and sometimes their glances happen at the same time and their eyes meet and they try to look away before the other suspects.
I think this also because in the same panel, he calls the king malevolent which is a pretty harsh thing to say about someone you may have had feelings for. There is never any thought of regret or ' if things were different' or 'once we..." Likewise the king is cool and matter of fact - 'you thought you were going to get away with it, but you're not. You started me on this path and you are going to finish it with me.' I just don't see anything beyond that.
A lot of people are talking about a hidden love. I don't see any love in this manga. Just dedication.
