I also actually love how he didn't just downright give the grasshoppers to the people he knew (except for the kid,it was his grasshoppers afterall). He didn't give it to his co workers,Sangah and Myungwoo, an even though he knew Hyunsung was also part of the characters in the story he didn't give a grasshopper to him.
He threw it and didn't decide out of all the people there who is meant or who deserves to survive,he left their survival to fate and luck.
I agree with you!I also love that he is self aware of his own actions! It makes him more realistic and different from the other MCs who uselessly have high sense of justice. He was only a normal office worker that just so happened to love reading novels,he wasn't born a hero.Hid hipocrisy and slight selfishness in the situation shows how most people also would've done if they were in his choose.Well I would even done what he did if we're in his shoes.

Right??? He wasn't bias on who to save just because he knows them. Imagine what would've happened if he outright gave the grasshoppers to them, people would still riot so i believe what he did was just right since he couldn't possibly save everyone and he certainly isn't responsible for everyones lives.
It pains me to see that people are hating Kim dokja for what he did at the grasshopper scene. I personally love that part and it really leaves an impact on me. It's that particular scene that pulled me in the story. He isn't too focused on "Saving everyone" like some generic mc, specially it's all about survival. I for one love the part where he admitted that he was a hypocrite, just gave me chills. I like that he is realistic and rational at that moment. He is a great example of a grey character. Like you can't really call him kind or bad. He have flaws existing to a real person which makes him very relatable. I doubt anyone would think of saving everyone if they're on his shoes in a real life situation, They'd be more focused on saving themselves because that's what I would do. And if i have the information that someone is going to become a threat in the future, i wouldn't hesitate to kill that someone to remove the possible hardship that i might face.
As I've read the novel, I'd say Kim dokja is a kind of character who have this realism in him that you don't normally see in this kinda stories which are usually power trip fantasies and trite cliches. As story progresses, he feels less of a fictional character and more of a real living person. Kim dokja's have this certain depth in him and that's firmly embedded on the plot
