They are older (around 18) when Jian Yi comes back and Zheng Xi is in university.
And honestly, many children start smoking when they are 12 or 13 years old (maybe not most of people, but a lot of them start "trying" alcohol or cigarettes, at least at parties at that age...)

And at first it shocked me too that they are so young, but some people (like 2 of every 10 boys/girls) looks older than the rest. My little brother is 12, my little sister is 11 and both of them look like if they had 14 years old. (because they are tall and outgoing)

Sorry but they are in middle school right now. They are going to be in the same high school later on but Jian Yi disappeared without a trace on the second day. He came back 3 years later. Zheng Xi is in college and Jian Yi is still in high school.
