Also I don't think he just realized how shitty he was I'm sure he knew he was shitty he just didn't realize how shitty he actually was. I think he did love her in their first life just hadn't realized it. He thought the best way to protect her was to not to get involved with her.
I don't really know how i feel about the ML but I do like that he aware of how much he fucked up. He doing his best to make up for what he did he knows he might never be forgiven and he okay with that, he just wants FL and Ellie to grow up and be happy whether he involved or not.
