it's kinda hard to explain but basically a servant belongs to the emperor as well so if the servant manages to catch the emperor's attention and play it right, they can promoted to something else (forgot what it's called). Eventually after a lot of promotions, the servant can become an empress but in real life, there were rules about how the empress has to come from a more noble background.
I just noticed that all those good looking men are all of good character and the mediocre or plane ones are the bad guys. Nyahahaha
Though, I can understand the difference between these brothers.
Jing Chen and jing shao are from the same mother who is the epitome of being the empress.
Jing Ro is from a concubine
Jing Yu is from a servant turned empress. Tsk. Though I still don't understand how a servant became an empress. Hopefully, they will explain it before the novel ends.
