They tend to make the characters taller in manga and anime. That's why. In real life it would be as you say...... I think... Just my opinion...

I'm living in a third world country and women's average height is about 160, so I kinda doubt that
According to a quick google search the average hight in Japan is ~1.7m or ~5.7, which makes 1.6m rather small (but it's probably relatively common)
sometimes i wonder, how can they say 160 short? for asian (well in my place for acurately) it's normal cause u can see so much people with 150 height. i think japanese height average is 160 cm too. am i wrong? （￣へ￣）??
