That dude atm thinks of Penelope as a stupid aristocrat girl who he can manipulate to get his freedom, but eventually he starts to like her and becomes obsessed with her. He then brings back the Duke's real daughter to isolate Penelope and have her for himself and to Penelope that's the worst thing anyone could do to her. He knows Penelope will never truly love him and their relationship was basically "I use you and you use me" and they both knew that they were using eachother so he decided "if I can't have your heart I'll just have your body".
