I don't agree either, but let's keep in mind that a woman's opinion wasn't very valued during that time, so it's not like she can do anything about it. The only things she can control are the benefits her fiancee's family can give her family's business, so she is basically using every thing she can to make the match as favorable as possible.
Even if she broke the engagement with this dude, society would assume that the fault lied with her and not the scumbag fiancee
