imagine that the punishment is that his memories of the past are erased little by little so he wont know that he has become what he hated until it was too late, does that make sense?
like imagine he was so hell bent on becoming a better person but bc he doesn't even remember how he acted in the past he doesn't know what to change so he ends up becoming the same person as before, im reaching a little but just food for thought
