I don't think you need experience for these things but it's more of a habit of watch people, it's called human wisdom. As a priest he probably saw alot of things dealing with love so he is able to come up with his own idea about certain situations

There are many different types of love, empty love, abusive love, physical love, parental love. Love inst something that can be tied down to only one instance that you've encountered it. But with the way the FL was describing it made it sound like she was using parental love, and even that has it nunces. And probably the reason he took it back to parental love is him just using the most relatable example he had used with her previously.
Just because he's a priest Dosent mean he Dosent know about love. Every creature that walks in this earth and flys in the air will feel some type of love, wether to work, a friend, family members etc. He's just describing it as he sees it. Even those that have been I love for a long time and have been in many relationships, don't know about every single type of love that can be counted out there
