I've had people try to defend it like "oh well he was turned into a vampire at 17 and that's where his brain development stopped so mentally he's the same as Bella."
But here's the thing. Say someone gets a traumatic brain injury at 17 that makes it so their mental maturity stagnates at 17 and their brain stops developing. That person still ages. So eventually this person turns 50 and starts dating a 16 year old. It doesn't matter that his brain stopped maturing at 17, he's still 50 fucking years old! And even if his mental age has stagnated, there's also a huge difference between life experiences. And no one would care that his mental age is still 17, because it's creepy no matter what for a 50 year old to be dating a high school student. But when it's a hot vampire who still looks 17 despite being over a hundred, everyone is okay with it.
