...i searched for this manga trying to find answers to the same questions and reading your comment kinda made me think of a few things
...friday died due to some disease probably, leaving their research on finding a soul for corpses unfinished. But as scientists, he left it to watson to continue searching by using his own corpse and giving him the signal as to show that their experiment is successful... this is also probably why he began the research with watson in the first place coz he knows he's about to die...
...the russian research, i dont't know, but it was probably just to further develop corpses as assassin or soldiers... this is also probably why karamazov stole the notes, wanting to destroy the note and stop researchers on reanimating corpses... (tho his way of proving his point to watson was extreme - poor nikolai)...
...the nekroritual has two sides... from the one's pov, he wants to use all the corpses to get his bride... from M's pov, he wants to wipe out humanity totally...
...at the end of the movie, we see what happened to the notes we see watson holding after the battle with the one... he mentioned putting it into his memory and going to a horizon they can never reach... it could be that they perfected the reinstating of the soul or maybe some sort of 'reincarnating' it, losing his memories in the process...i guess this is why he chose himself as the subject for the experiment, leaving friday with the hope that "someday they'll..." i'm still unclear whether his memories were really wiped or just hidden under layers just so he can have a 'normal life' (albeit with another partner)... we also hear friday narrating the stuff that happened and how in this part we can assume that he gained a soul...
...but still, all these are just my thoughts based on what i've seen on the movie... i wish the manga was finished...( ˘ω˘ )

reading your reply soothed my broken heart so much (≧∀≦) /I had had depression hha/
Yes, that ritual is to bring her bride back, indeed. And, I agree with your opinion/theory. But I'm truly unsatisfied with the ending. :<
It's just that when you look at glance, everything is clear, understandable and logical. But on second thoughts, the plot is just rounded up and the reasonings are too general, not giving specific or scientific details. ╥﹏╥
Don't mind my reply, really. I'm just being a butthurt ass 'cause my precious babes couldn't be together in the end :<< Friday x Watson! (/TДT)/

...haha same here.... i don't usually comment on stuff but the anime was so unfulfilled that i searched for the manga hoping to get an end to my questions. The manga seems to have more explanations missing in the movie but as it is unfinshed (i hope the rest are translated, not just the 4 chapters), i'm left with whatever conclusions i can get from the anime. Well, the story may have a different ending on itou's hands but we'll never know.
( ˘ω˘ )
But if they're going for the holmes story, with hadaly as irene, then darn if they put a twist on friday as moriarty...(^ν^).... somebody should write about it....
I assume that all of you have seen the movie, and wondering wtf just happened?? (If you have seen the ending, ofc ╥﹏╥) Well, apparently the author-san has passed away without finished her work. So, WE'RE NEVER GONNA KNOW WHY JOHN MADE HIMSELF A CORPSE. AND WHY HE LOST HIS MEMORY. AND HOW FRIDAY AND JOHN IS STILL LIVELY (even if they are corpses) AND WHETHER HE FOUND THE SOUL OR NOT. And whether Friday got his memory or soul back. Rlly, this is just depressing ╥﹏╥ I'm guessing that the WIT studio or Tomoyuki Hino-san wrote the ending (maybe) That's why the ending's a mess. Rlly, I admired this work so much that I can't let it out of my head. Beautiful masterpiece for me. But I must say that it left a big hole in me that John's a corpse and he can't be together with Friday. So many unanswered questions┗( T﹏T )┛Such classic bittersweet ending for the two. Btw, do you get the feeling that Friday is the Moriarty?? lol.
