I understand the perspectives of the son and the female lead, but not the male lead. It's odd he held into the he's "the best choice" for years and it's the only reason why he completely neglected both of his wife and son. I do understand that he's working hard for the whole dukedom, and that's great of him but he was bad as a father and husband.

Okay okay so they both neglected him in different ways. The mom physically and emotionally neglected him and the dad I’m guessing emotionally neglected him, not the most ideal parents. Both of them aren’t that great .
She never physically did anything to him. She ignored him while the male lead made him grew up in a strict environment with no actual love nor communication.
Physical neglect means stuff like feeding him like making sure he’s healthy and stuff like that
