I can't blame the guy, he really didn't know, and asking his best friend would imply that he was interested in his "ex" (if they had broken up) which, news flash, you never hook up with one of your friends ex's. I honestly feel bad that his BEST friend abandoned him like that without ever trying to hear him out, almost as if so called friend barely had trust in him. Plus the guy regrets it so let's not bash him.
