from what I read she is poisoned and thats why she went to the bird (apparently its from her mother's side, they can do that) and for her to get back to her body is (I cant remember if its to drink the antidote or the bird should be poisoned by the same poison), so basically she can only switch position via the poison.
I'd like to believe that she turned into a bird and that the enemy is just trying to confuse ML into falling into a trap by saying that the princess is with them.
